The Share Plate Guide to... Illawarra Beers and Spirits The Share Plate Guide to... Illawarra Beers and Spirits

Food and drink around the Illawarra has boomed in the last couple of years. There are more than a few examples of entrepreneurial locals tapping into the desire for delicious new beers and spirits. So, right in time for a Sunday sesh or to make plans for next weekend, let’s share the love for people creating a cultural shift around Wollongong, Gerringong and the Coal Coast.

Starting with the local brands you can sit and drink with:

Five Barrel Brewing

This reliable microbrewery run by Phil O’Shea prides itself on having a voice for small brewers in the Illawarra community. Their core business is locals and Phil focuses on selling within the area. Winner of Best New Brewery at the 2016 Sydney Craft Beer Week Awards, the small space tucked into the industrial area on Wollongong’s south side has recently opened a food truck run by Phil’s mum and dad offering range of taps, with four standards and four rotating. The core range are popular for good reason, with the Golden Ale and New England IPA constant high sellers.

Our faves:

  • From the core range, we can’t go past the The Hoppy Amber, a malty IPA style beer

  • From the current rotating taps, the new Brut Rosé IPA is a flavourful, dry drop that gets it’s deep colour from Hibiscus flowers

Where can I buy?

Local stockists around the Illawarra, and the brewery is open 12pm-6pm Mon-Thurs, 12pm-9pm Fri and Sat, at 318 Keira St, Wollongong.

Coal Coast Brewing Co

The newest entrant on the list is inspired by the region’s coal mining heritage and has become ingrained in the Illawarra’s northern suburbs already. Coal Coast are releasing their range over time. First up was the Pit Pony Pale Ale with the Ode to Amy Common Ale followed earlier this year. A deep connection to the locals is shown in their partnership with the Scarborough Boardriders and we're already looking forward to their next release.

Our faves:

  • What can we say. Both Pit Pony and Ode to Amy are top notch.

Where can I buy?

The tins are stocked in the Northern Suburbs and Wollongong with select venues on tap. Contact the Coal Coast team through social below or drop into a local stockist to grab a growler!

Illawarra Brewing Co

The arguable OG of the local beer scene. Owner Dave McGrath knows his way around a brew, and has been churning out releases regularly for quite some time. Hosting everything from food trucks each Saturday to the occasional music festival in their fun-as-hell warehouse, Illawarra Brewing are firm believers in supporting the locals that support them.

Our fave:

  • Chuck Norris is a longstanding favourite, though lately Lager Time has been threatening that crown

Where can I buy?

Buy direct - the warehouse space is open 12pm-8pm Wed & Thu, 12pm-11.45pm Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at Unit 4/83-85 Montague Street, North Wollongong.

Stoic Brewing

The southernmost entry on our list, Stoic Brewing popped up in Gerringong in 2018. Family owned and run, they have a space on the edge of the small coastal town, and no background in the field - these guys are homebrewers that love it so much, they wanted to share it with everyone. Easygoing brews are on offer alongside tidy ciders as Stoic establish themselves, with more experimentation on the horizon. For now, they are doing the basics very well.

Our faves:

  • The Session Ale goes down easy and the IPA punches through with deep flavour.

Where can I buy?

Direct - Stoic are open Wed & Thurs 3pm-7pm, Fri 3pm-8pm, Sat 12pm-8pm, Sun 12pm-7pm, at 6/45 Rowlins Rd, Gerringong.

Reub Goldberg Brewing Machine

This tucked away little brewhouse has become a beacon for the community in Tarrawanna. Initially offering a weekly rotating tap list as they pulled their production together, they have now hit their customers with a growing range of Rueb brews that have been well worth the wait. A great atmosphere with a regularly packed out front deck area each weekend, Reub is a fantastic Sunday arvo option in the sunshine.

Our fave:

  • The taplist is a great curated selection, but you can’t go past their own brews – try the ESB, thank us later.

Where can I buy?

Inhouse only for taps and growler fills - open Thurs & Fri 3pm-8pm, Sat & Sun 12pm-8pm, at 81 Meadow St, Tarrawanna.

Headlands Distillery

Four local friends have created Wollongong's first vodka, starting a journey that will soon be branching into gin and whiskey as they seek to produce a quality range of hand-crafted spirits. The team has established relationships with farmers from the Riverina region of NSW, where they trace the origin of ingredients to the very paddock they were grown.

Our fave:

  • Their signature Seacliff vodka

Where can I buy?

Their space is open 4pm-7pm Fridays and 12pm-4pm Sundays at 12/6-8 Ralph Black Drive, North Wollongong.

South Coast Distillery

Friends Oskar and Luke, began a household weekly martini tradition almost ten years ago, and the two now have a small batch distillery on their hands. Their first release, 'Batch Zero', received Gold at the Australian Distilled Spirits Awards and went on to take out the Champion Australian Small Batch Spirit - an impressive feat for a brand less than five months old. Keep your ears to the ground for their upcoming gin making workshops where you can give blending your own custom gin a shot.

Our faves:

  • The current release Sublime Gin is a nice drop – keep an eye out for their soon to be released Breakwater Gin

Where can I buy?

You can buy online through their store and the boys are at Kiama Farmers each Wed, Berry Farmers Market each Thurs and Bulli Foragers Market each Sunday. Visits are currently by appointment until their launch in May at Unit 8/2 Drummond St, Mount Saint Thomas.

Hunter and the Harp Meadery

Mead? As in, the drink of vikings and yesteryear? That’s right, the Illawarra has it’s own meadery in Hunter and the Harp – and the results are striking. Owner Joel creates flavours using local ingredients and has a keen sense for producing meads that aren’t overtly sweet – if anything, they sit in between the lines of beer, wine, sparkling and what you would instinctively think mead should taste like. A truly unique addition to the local alcohol scene.

Our faves:

  • The sour series, incorporating finger lime and blackberry, are fantastic – though currently sold out. Look out for Joel’s new releases on this front.

  • Saison Siege, from the Sparkling range, takes the farmhouse brewing traditions of European beer and uses hyperlocal raw honey to create a beautifully balanced mead.

Axel Vodka

An award winning student from Coledale, Remy Crick decided to start a premium vodka business - and has she ever pulled it off. Focusing on a sole product available in 200ml and 700ml bottles, the entire brand has been developed in line with sustainable initiatives and a locally focused attitude. All ingredients are sourced from within a 100km radius of the Illawarra and the result is a triple distilled luxury spirit of the highest quality.

Our faves:

  • There’s only one release, in 200ml or 700ml bottles. Buy the larger size, it is well worth it.

Where can I buy?

A host of local Sydney and Illawarra restaurants and small bars stock Axel, plus the brand has recently become stocked in Dan Murphy’s nationwide.
