Mountainous terrain, ancient rainforest and a pounding ocean: Tasmania’s beauty is raw. It’s this blend of rugged and refined that makes the state a utopia for food-lovers. From the surrounds of Devonport heading up to Stanley and Robbins Island, the Cradle to Coast Tasting Trail highlights the finest produce Tasmania’s bountiful north-west has to offer.
There are great itineraries along the Trail, such as the Couple Couple route. This route is all about you - offering a host of opportunities to enjoy and taste while supporting fantastic local businesses. We’ve picked out some highlights for amazing spots to eat while you’re travelling through the Trail!
An industrial-style setting frames an open kitchen inside CharlotteJack, the new restaurant from celebrity chef Ben Millbourne. Housed at Providore Place in Devonport next to Southern Wild Distillery, the restaurant is at the centre of what could grow to become an Australian food innovation hub over the next few years. Both intimate and relaxed, CharlotteJack is a celebration of food, family and fun, with a ‘Farm to Fork’ philosophy that has led to a locavore menu which showcase the farmers, fishermen, growers and winemakers surrounding Devonport – get in touch to book one of their Produce Tours and meet the makers up close.
- We want to just say order one of everything on the share plate menu, though the Fried Chicken is a customer favourite for a reason

Palate Food and Drink, Burnie
Owner and Chef Joseph Bugg operates Palate as a café-and-restaurant serving beautifully presented dishes and degustation dinners that book out months in advance. A strong supporter of the local community, he purchases produce from neighbouring farms and uses microgreens grown kilometres away by the social enterprise initiative Produce to the People.

Hursey Seafoods, Stanley
Considering Stanley is a coastal town built on the back of the fishing industry, it would be crazy to visit and not try the best seafood on offer. Our suggestion? Head to to the tip of town, past the Nut chair lift, where you’ll find the multistorey Hursey Seafoods. A fleet of nine fishing boats provide the daily supply of incredibly fresh fish, lobster, scallops and more, with takeaways available on the ground level and a restaurant upstairs if you’d like to sit in.
- Abalone are best when they are served without much fuss. At Hursey, they are lightly pan seared until tender and the result is simplicity at its finest.

Panoramic views of Bass Strait over the beach are a beautiful background for dining at Bayviews. A Tasmanian-focused menu highlights producers such as Roland Farm, Longford and Cape Grim in heartily refined dishes. The menu isn’t huge, which isn’t a negative – there are more than enough options for the fussiest of eaters. Our advice? Definitely save room for the luxurious desserts, a perfect way to cap a scenic seaside dinner.
- The Share Plate team love dumplings, so that is an easy recommendation when they are this good – for something a little more substantial, the slow cooked feta crusted lamb shoulder with pumpkin gnocchi and candied olives is a winner.
La Mar, Turners Beach
Opposite Turners Beach sits the popular café La Mar, renowned locally as a lively spot to order great food. Service is quick and the menu ranges from hearty faves to raw and organic sweet treats. Keeping it casual as all the best beachside eateries do, a cute alfresco area outside completes the picture.
- La Mar does Burgers by the Beach each Friday night, a perfect way to unwind before the weekend - our pick is the Pork Rib burgers with chipotle coleslaw corn salsa.

The Chapel, Burnie
Sitting inside a restored Methodist church built in the 1890s, the Chapel Café provides a beautifully warm atmosphere to accompany a great café menu and a respectably wide range of Tasmanian spirits for a long lazy afternoon. Bringing in singer-songwriters to perform acoustic numbers during service adds to the ambience, and the menus make a point of using produce from local farms. There’s a good chance the Chapel is the best café in Tasmanias north-west.
- The Ultimate Toastie: Tasmanian pork sits with melted gruyere cheese and creamy bechamel.

The Tasmanian Food & Wine Conservatory, Sassafras
Inside a striking white building on the side of the Bass Highway sits a treasure trove of quality Tasmanian food and drink. Supporting local producers has been a key ingredient to the success of the Conservatory, with each visit essentially becoming a fun scavenger hunt to find the new items that have been painstakingly sourced and stocked. With quality coffee alongside a beautifully presented menu that highlights local ingredients, it is easy to lose an entire afternoon or two sitting inside the breezy European-sunroom-turned-Cuban-café interior.
- Choose a platter – any platter – and prepare to be amazed with the provided selection
Visit at 9 Conservatory Road, Sassafras.
Linking almost 50 producers, farm gates, retailers and foodie experiences from the state’s north-west to create a tour like no other, the Cradle to Coast Tasting Trail is a unique food experience.
